What I offer
I offer mentoring exclusively for PhD students. I am happy to share my experience and advice, and moderate discussions on one of the following topics:
-) Career (academia vs. industry, application procedures, going abroad, what do I look for when hiring a postdoc, working as a PI, starting an independent research group,...)
-) Conflict situations (e.g., with the supervisor, with colleagues,...)
-) Scientific integrity
-) Scientific communication (papers, presentations, public outreach)
-) Diversity, LGBTIQ+
-) Other topics, according to the interests of the group
I am also happy to invite guest speakers/mentors to offer diverse perspectives on specific topics and to mediate connections to other researchers within my extensive network (e.g., for job inquiries, research stays abroad, questions about specific methods...). I am further open to scientific collaborations, and (a limited number) of internships and observers of experiments / daily lab life. Patient contact is not possible, as we are a basic research laboratory.
What I expect from the students
I expect students to actively participate in meetings by asking questions and suggesting topics. I also expect everyone in the group to contribute to an open, respectful, constructive, and confidential atmosphere.
Time constraints for meetings
In the first meeting with the group, and based on individual interests, we will decide together on the frequency, duration, and location of the meetings. I am open to meeting at our institute and/or at more comfortable external locations, usually during or right after regular working hours (09:00 - 20:00) for ~2-2.5 hours per session. Including the first meeting, we will meet at least five times per semester.
What else I would like to say
I studied Biotechnology at BOKU University, and I have been an independent PI since summer 2022. I have already supervised researchers at all stages of their careers, worked closely with partners in academia and industry, and I identify as LGBTIQ+. I enjoy mentoring a lot and see it as a great opportunity to help the next generation of scientists. My research is focused on aging, cellular senescence, RNA modifications, and ribosomes. We use skin cells, skin organoids, C. elegans, and mice as model systems.
