Was ich anbiete

With over 15 years of international research experience, teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students, I bring a well-rounded perspective that bridges medicine and population health. Students will benefit from interacting with a mentor who combines clinical training as a medical doctor with deep expertise in epidemiology and public health research.

Working in non-clinical specialties such as public health offers a dynamic and impactful career path that goes beyond individual patient care to address health at the population level. It involves interdisciplinary collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and the opportunity to influence policies and prevention strategies that improve community health outcomes. Students joining my group will have the opportunity to explore and discover the field of Public Health and Epidemiology.

My research focuses on occupational health, cancer epidemiology, and the impact of shift work and circadian disruption on chronic disease risk, including the role of biomarkers for chronic disease risk. I am actively involved in several national and international research projects and bring a global perspective to my work. Students will familiarize themselves with this research topic and will develop an occupational health perspective.

Diploma theses in the field of epidemiology are possible as part of ongoing projects within my research group. While these projects do not involve direct patient contact, there may be opportunities for interaction with study participants, depending on the study and timing. Information about research stays abroad and international collaboration opportunities will also be provided to interested students.

As a mentor, I value equity, resilience, and curiosity. I understand the diverse challenges medical students may face—and I aim to foster an inclusive and supportive environment. Students will have the opportunity to explore interdisciplinary paths, think critically, and develop their own voice as future clinicians, scientists, or both.

Please note that mentoring and supervision will be conducted in English.

Was ich von den Studierenden erwarte

As a mentor, I value curiosity, openness, and a genuine interest in research and public health. I appreciate students who are motivated, reliable, and willing to actively engage with new ideas—even outside their comfort zone. You don’t need prior experience in epidemiology, but I do expect commitment, clear communication, and a respectful attitude toward peers and collaborators. In our group, we work in a supportive and inclusive environment where questions are welcomed, diverse perspectives are encouraged, and learning is a shared goal. What I would like to avoid are passive participation, lack of communication, or a purely checkbox approach to research. I hope to work with students who are open to learning, ready to contribute, and curious about how research can improve real-world health outcomes.

Zeitliche Vorgaben für Treffen

We will hold regular monthly in-person meetings in my office to discuss progress, questions, and next steps. These meetings provide an important opportunity for feedback, exchange of ideas, and collaborative learning. If needed, meetings can also be held online to accommodate specific circumstances. The exact timing will be agreed upon together with the group, taking into account everyone’s availability and academic schedules.

Was ich sonst noch sagen möchte

After having studied medicine, public health and epidemiology, one of the key reasons I remained in research is my deep passion for my field—shift work, circadian rhythm research, and epidemiology. At present, I am a Group leader int he Department of EPidemiology in the Centre for Public Health and Principal Investigator of SHIFT2HEALTH, an EU-funded project focused on the prevention of obesity in shift workers. I am also affiliated with ISGlobal in Barcelona, Spain where I collaborate on several projects related to shift work, light pollution and circadian health. I currently also serve as a Board Member of the Working Time Society and as Secretary of the ICOH Scientific Committee on Shift Work and Working Time. A central goal of my work is to translate scientific findings into effective policy to promote safe and healthy working hours for all workers. I am also committed to applying chronobiological knowledge to medicine, prevention, and therapy, particularly through the education and training of medical students.

As a woman, mother, and international researcher who has navigated an interdisciplinary career path across diverse countries (Greece, Spain, the UK, and the US), institutions, languages, and cultural contexts, I understand the challenges and opportunities that come with forging one’s own path in science and academia. This experience allows me to offer personalized guidance, support resilience, and foster adaptability—qualities essential for success in today’s complex research and healthcare environments. My goal is to help students not only develop strong scientific skills but also discover their unique professional identity, aligning their career aspirations with their personal values and life goals.
